On August 29th, the first HoD Indaba of 2024 brought together academic Chairs and Heads of Departments (HoDs) from across the University for a day centred around the theme, "Leadership: Finding Your Way." This event formed part of the Leadership Development project at Stellenbosch University (SU) funded by the University Capacity Development Grant. This event was designed to foster dialogue, share wisdom and build a supportive community among academic leaders who navigate the unique challenges of heading departments.
The theme set the stage for deep conversations about the complex role of a Chair or Head of Department. The position requires not only academic excellence but also the ability to lead effectively, manage department dynamics, and make strategic decisions that shape the future of academic programs. It aims to equip HoDs with the tools, insights, and support they need to succeed in their demanding role.
A key highlight of the day was the "Pathfinders" session, where experienced former HoDs shared their reflections on the role. These veterans spoke candidly about the challenges they faced and the strategies they used to overcome them. Their insights offered current HoDs a roadmap for their own leadership journeys, emphasizing the importance of resilience, maintaining balance, and making a meaningful impact.
The event also provided ample opportunities for current HoDs to engage with one another, exchanging practical solutions for common challenges. These interactions were invaluable in building a network of support and shared knowledge among academic leaders.
Looking ahead, the second Indaba, scheduled for October 3rd, will focus on "Challenging Conversations," providing HoDs with strategies and skills for handling uncomfortable and sensitive issues, such as addressing performance concerns and resolving conflicts. The final event in the series, set for November 20th, will be a celebration of leadership, honouring the achievements and contributions of HoDs throughout the year.
