Prof Frans Swanepoel, Director of the African Doctoral Academy (ADA), represented South Africa through the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), together with representatives from 18 other Science Academies on the African continent, at a workshop at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre in Italy.
The Bellagio Centre's mission is to promote innovation and identify impact-oriented solutions to critical global problems.
The outcome of the week-long Bellagio meeting is a consensus report on Africa's development agenda beyond 2015, informing the African Union's Agenda 2063. The ADA led the discussion on capacity building strategies focusing on higher education and institutional strengthening.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) and the ADA has partnered to strengthen capacity building, especially doctoral education and training on the continent. Special focus has been placed on Makarere University in Uganda and University of Ghana, Legon. These are two of the CCNY's anchor universities on the continent.
The Consensus Report will officially be launched at a high level ministerial conference in Kampala, Uganda on 9-10 November 2014, linked to the 10th Annual Meeting of the African Science Academies (AMASA-10).
