Statement by Mr George Steyn, Chairperson of the Stellenbosch University Council:
All faculties at Stellenbosch University (SU) should implement the languages of instruction in accordance with the approved Language Policy and Language Plan, as well as the Council motion of 30 November 2015. In this motion Council declared that language may never be an obstacle to any student who wishes to study at SU.
Prof P W van der Walt, Deputy Chair of Council, and I had discussions with the Rector, Prof Wim de Villiers, and Prof Arnold Schoonwinkel, Vice-Rector: Learning and Teaching, on language implementation in faculties to ensure alignment with SU's approved plans. I comprehend the complexities related to the practical implementation of multilingualism at Stellenbosch University. Management has assured us that this matter is receiving their urgent attention.
The University Council has a governance function to ensure that the specifications of approved policies, also the Language Policy, are adhered to. The Executive Committee of Council will consider the current situation at its upcoming meeting and will report to Council.
