The Maties-Helderberg Sports Club for People with Disabilities is well represented in the national team that will participate in the 6thInternasionale Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships. This will take place in Lyon, France, from 19-28 July.
A team of 39 members (32 athletes, four coaches, a physiotherapist, a team manager and an assistant team manager) will represent South Africa in France.
The participants affiliated to the Maties-Helderberg Sports Club is Ilse Hayes, Anruné Liebenberg, Zanele Situ, Dyan Buis, Charl du Toit, Arnu Fourie, Reinhardt Hamman, Jean Joubert, Hilton Langehoven, Kerwin Noemdo, Jonathan Ntutu and Fanie van der Merwe.
Anruné, Charl and Kerwin are all students of Stellenbosch University.
Dr Suzanne Ferreira, a lecturer in the Department of Sport Science at SU, and Karin le Roux will accompany the team as coaches.
At the last IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, Team South Africa ended 10th on the medals table with a total of 24 medals. The medals tally was made up of eight gold, seven silver and nine bronze.
Approximately 1 300 athletes from 90 countries are expected to attend Lyon 2013, the first major gathering of international track and field stars following London.
