Stellenbosch University (SU) took note of enquiries arising from a letter that was sent to former students of Wilgenhof residence regarding the allocation of places in this residence on the grounds of a donation made to the residence.
The University responds as follows:
The communication by Mr Daniel Malan, residence head of Wilgenhof, to former residents of Wilgenhof about residence placement was based on a misunderstanding of the status quo of an agreement with the University Management.
He is already informing former Wilgenhoffers that no formal agreement was reached with the SU management about special placement arrangements for first-years in Wilgenhof, especially with regard to places to be allocated to students nominated by former Wilgenhoffers on the grounds of a donation to SU.
SU Management will initiate discussions will all residences to see how they (the residences) can fill a number of first-year places if there is such a need, as long as it meets SU's goals of academic merit and the promotion of diversity.
Earlier this year during Wilgenhof's 110 year reunion, the residence accepted a motion that the residence placement policy of the University, as approved by the SU Council in April this year, be supported.
