Three students from Stellenbosch University have recently been accepted at different Chinese universities where they will continue their studies in fields related to Chinese Language instruction.
Bjorn Leif Brauteseith, Mikaela Keen and Catherine Dollman will be pursuing their postgraduate studies in China starting September 2013, at Xiamen University, Renmin University and Beijing Language University respectively.
Their acceptance into these international universities is preceded by lengthy involvement in many Chinese language and cultural activities at Stellenbosch, most notably by means of involvement with the Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University (CISU). All three students have studied Mandarin for a number of years and have obtained various awards for their participation in local and international rounds of the Chinese Bridge Competition.
The aforementioned is a prestigious competition where non-native Chinese speakers display their knowledge of Mandarin and perform a classical or contemporary Chinese art or custom, such as calligraphy, martial arts or performing Chinese songs.
Acceptance into the Chinese universities is even more significant since these students are graduates of the first Honours (Mandarin) class presented by the Department Modern Foreign Languages at Stellenbosch University in 2013.
Undertaking postgraduate studies at a Chinese university in the fields they have applied for, signify mastery at a high level of the Chinese language and a deeper understanding of cultural aspects and customs.
