DASO hands memorandum to SU

About 20 students participated in a march on the Stellenbosch University (SU) campus on Tuesday (15 March). The event was organised by the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO).

According to a statement released by DASO, the purpose of the march is "to start our year-long 'Inclusive Institution' campaign and to raise awareness around issues that students face".

"Our campaign and march will focus on issues which are prohibiting students to feel included at the University – being the unavailability of Halaal food in most residences, gender inequality, universal access, and general issues which disabled students face, and of course, the language policy," according to the statement.

After meeting on the Rooiplein, the students proceeded to march to the Admin B building to hand over their memorandum.

Dr Munita Dunn-Coetzee, Senior Director: Centre for Student Counselling and Development, accepted the memorandum on behalf the University.

The University acknowledges the right of staff and students to participate in peaceful protest, provided that the administrative and academic activities are not disrupted; that actions do not lead to any risks to the safety of staff and students, or university property; and that the rights of students to study or attend classes are not infringed upon.
