Three new members of the Stellenbosch University Council have been elected by the Convocation of the University: Adv Jan Christiaan Heunis, Prof André Coetzee and Mr Heinrich Gonzales. These three members will serve from 2 April 2016 until 1 April 2020.
A fourth vacancy has also arisen due to the resignation of Dr GC (George) du Toit at the end of 2015. He was elected to Council by the Convocation for the period 2 April 2014 to 1 April 2018. Members of the Convocation will be invited to nominate candidates in due course. If more than one candidate should be nominated, an election will follow. This Council member's term of office will end on 1 April 2018, the same date as for the original appointment.
Members of the Convocation were requested to submit nominations in order to fill the three vacancies. As more than three candidates were nominated, an election was held. Voting closed on 10 March 2016. The validity of all ballots was verified.
Adv Heunis, Senior Counsel, is the President of the Stellenbosch University Convocation. Prof Coetzee is an emeritus professor and Executive Chairman, Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, at Stellenbosch University and Mr Gonzales is an admitted attorney employed by AfriForum.
